Prosecutor Who Fled to Spain Is Returned
The prosector who broke Mexican political tradition by jailing the brother of former President Carlos Salinas de Gortari returned in handcuffs from Spain, where he had fled shortly after leaving office. Pablo Chapa Bezanilla, who had been held in a Spanish jail since May pending extradition hearings, landed in Mexico City under Mexican police guard and was driven to a jail, witnesses said. Chapa Bezanilla had been wanted by Mexican authorities since he fled the country in February. He gave authorities the slip when they issued an arrest warrant accusing him of taking part in a bizarre body-snatching episode. Authorities said the alleged scheme involved planting a corpse at Raul Salinas de Gortari’s ranch with the possible aim of adding to evidence against him in the slaying of Francisco Ruiz Massieu, a top member of the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party.
