FAA May Inspect Jet Fuel Tanks

Saying the aviation industry’s move to inspect fuel systems on 2,000 jet aircraft doesn’t go far enough, the Federal Aviation Administration is considering ordering its own inspections to cover more of the worldwide fleet, FAA officials said. And in a shift in its approach to the issue, the agency is also planning to address the flammable nature of fuel tanks--as opposed to just ignition sources--in a range of new rules now under consideration, a direct result of the TWA Flight 800 tragedy last year.
