Not Everyone Buys ‘Rent’
I was assaulted and mugged for 70 bucks on a beautiful afternoon. All this happened in the Ahmanson in two hours of commercial over-hyped electronic nonsense called “Rent.”
When are we going to admit that in contemporary musical theater the emperor has no clothes? I go to the theater to hear real, live people sing, not to be bombarded by larger-than-life screaming electronic effects.
To turn theater into an electronic medium is to lose its unique human scale. If I wanted an electronic experience, I’d go to a movie or stay at home and watch a video. Pull the plug, please!
