Bakersfield Bumps Off the Cougars

MISSION VIEJO — Capistrano Valley’s final nonleague game was one Coach Dave Brown would rather forget. Bakersfield flexed its offensive muscle and shut out the Cougars, 36-0, Friday night at Capistrano Valley.

Bakersfield quarterback Timothy Osborn paced an efficient offense, completing seven of nine passes for 237 yards and four touchdowns.

Osborn gave Bakersfield a 7-0 lead when he connected with Roy Johnson for a 51-yard touchdown on the game’s fourth play.

Osborn, a senior, added three more long touchdown passes, hooking up with James McGill for 68 yards, Gary Austin for 48 yards, and finally, running back Darryl McCoy for an exciting 55-yard screen late in the first half.

Osborn also kicked a 25-yard field goal as time ran out in the first half to make the score 29-0.

“They’re a fabulous football team,” Brown said. “They are a fast team and our players couldn’t match their speed. That’s a red flag for us.”

Bakersfield’s defense was also dominating, limiting the Cougars to only 40 yards rushing and 74 yards passing.

The Drillers also held Capistrano Valley (2-1-2) to a single first down in the first half. Bakersfield defenders ran down Capistrano Valley’s receivers, giving up only one completion over 20 yards for the game.

“We’ve had a hard preseason schedule,” Brown said. “I want my players to forget about this game and focus on the new season that starts next week.”
