9 Students Cited in Truancy Sweep

Nine truants were cited and taken back to school this week in a sweep by sheriff’s deputies working in Camarillo.
The sweep is part of an effort by local officials to keep students in class and stop petty crime, said Deputy Jody Keller, a youth officer with the Sheriff’s Department’s Camarillo enforcement division.
“This is an annual thing we do,” Keller said. “We try to do [the sweeps] about once a month.”
Eight officers on Wednesday picked up the youths between about 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., she said.
One of the youths had more than 70 unexcused absences from class so far this year, Keller said.
The sweep comes just as City Council members consider a measure to set up a daytime curfew for youths under the age of 18 on school days.
