They Support a Comic Approach

My husband and I want to commend Lynn Johnston for including Lawrence in her comic strip “For Better Or For Worse.” We were very pleased to see the strips touching on a gay teenager’s anguish over the departure of his partner. The support Elly Patterson and her son, Michael, offer to Lawrence, who risks losing the most important person in his life, demonstrates the writer Johnston’s understanding of the fact that gay teenagers love and are often loved by their families and friends.
It is cruel to treat the subject of families as if there are no gay children growing up in them with the same needs and longings as other children. My husband and I raised three children, one gay. We know too well how our son and our family were harmed by the silence and ignorance surrounding the subject.
