Mission Viejo’s Chavis Scores 3 Early Touchdowns

Running back Mike Chavis scored three touchdowns in the first quarter to help Mission Viejo rout Santa Ana, 41-12, in a nonleague game Thursday at Santa Ana Stadium.

Chavis started his scoring spree by returning the opening kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown.

He was untouched on the play, which took 14 seconds.

“I got the ball, sprinted up, followed the wedge and a hole just opened up,” Chavis said.

Chavis then raced into the end zone on runs of six and 52 yards in the first quarter. He also added a two-point conversion.

In all, Chavis scored the three touchdowns on four touches and finished with 80 yards rushing. “We have a big line,” Chavis said. “We have a lot of big boys blocking so it is going to be a good year.”

Chavis was lifted for the rest of the half after his last touchdown, but his teammates kept it going.

Defensive back Mark Beigen intercepted a screen pass and ran 16 yards for a touchdown later in the first quarter.
