Baughman Passes for Record-Tying 6 Touchdowns

GARDEN GROVE — It didn’t take Bolsa Grande quarterback Doug Baughman long to shake off the opening-game jitters Thursday against visiting Laguna Beach.
One pass, to be exact.
After having a pass intercepted on the Matadors’ first play from scrimmage, Baughman threw touchdown passes on the next six Bolsa Grande possessions as the Matadors routed Laguna Beach, 37-7.
The six touchdown passes tied his school record and the junior finished with 394 yards passing on 19-of-29 attempts. Four of those touchdowns went to senior wide receiver Sam Baeder, who had eight catches for 209 yards.
The Matadors started slowly, taking 11 plays to move 55 yards on a late first-quarter drive that was capped by an eight-yard scoring pass from Baughman to Baeder. Bolsa Grande increased that lead to 19-0 by halftime, Baughman connecting on a 79-yard catch-and-run touchdown to tight end Jorge Pagoaga and a six-yard bullet over the middle to Ramon Nevarez for another score.
Baughman hooked up with Baeder on touchdown passes of 66, 16, and 18 yards in the third quarter, leaving the game with his team ahead, 37-0. The Artists, who didn’t pass the Matador 30 against the first-string defense, rallied in the final quarter behind sophomore quarterback Ryan Schissler (five of eight, 84 yards). His 37-yard pass to Kyle Johnson led to the only Laguna Beach touchdown, a three-yard run by Keaton Kiraly.
