Associated Press

A sheriff’s deputy was killed Tuesday and five other people were injured when a jail van crashed into a stalled big-rig truck on Interstate 5, temporarily shutting down the freeway and snarling commuter traffic for miles.

Lt. Jim Cooper said the dead officer was Sandy Larson, 53, a member of the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department since 1974.

The injured included a second deputy, Susan Rosenberg, and two Soledad Prison inmates, Robert Fowler and James Columbus, who were being transported to Sacramento for court appearances, Cooper said.
