OCC Opens Against De Anza

Orange Coast will play the first game in the women’s community college state basketball tournament, which starts Thursday at Concordia College.
The Pirates (25-9), who have won nine in a row, play De Anza (28-7) at 2 p.m. Fullerton (27-8) takes on San Jose (31-2) at 6 p.m. at Concordia.
In other first-round games: Cerritos (25-9) and Sierra (27-8) meet at 4 p.m. and two-time defending champion Ventura (34-1) plays Merritt at 8 p.m.
The tournament moves to UC Irvine for Friday’s semifinals and Saturday’s championship game.
The men’s tournament starts at 2 p.m. Thursday at UC Irvine, with Mt. San Jacinto (30-6) playing Porterville (28-5). At 4 p.m., Compton (24-3) takes on West Valley (30-3). At 6 p.m., Cerritos (30-4) meets Canada (27-5), and at 8 p.m., Bakersfield (30-3) battles San Jose (32-4).

The South team, which included several players from Orange County, beat the North, 3-0, in a boys’ high school all-star soccer game Sunday at Simi Valley Royal High.
Aaron McAthy of Huntington Beach and Nick Tolman of Fountain Valley each had assists and Kevin Mehrens of San Clemente had four saves in the first half in goal.

The Los Angeles Wildcats beat the Anaheim Jr. Ducks, 3-2, in the championship game of the Midget Division of the boys’ California Amateur Hockey Assn. State Tier II championships Sunday in Escondido.
The Wildcats also won the Midget Division and the West Valley Wolves won the Peewee Division.
