In the NCAA Division III softball championships:
Chapman 8, Cortland State (N.Y.) 0 (5 innings, mercy)--Catie Lacey pitched a four-hitter in the first round in Salem, Va. The shutout was the 15th for Chapman (36-7) and the seventh for Lacey (15-1).
Chapman advances to play Muskingum at 2:30 today. Muskingum (New Concord, Ohio) upset No. 1-seeded and defending national champion Simpson College of Indianola, Iowa, 5-2.
Seven Panthers combined for nine hits. Eight of them, including Amie Barnes’ home run, came off losing pitcher Leslie Lance (30-5).
“When you’re facing a first-team All-American [Lance],” said Chapman Coach Janet Lloyd, “you can’t expect any kind of a hitting game. It looks like our bats came with us.”
