Ballona Wetlands

Ellen Stern Harris raises legitimate concerns about traffic and air pollution impacts from LAX expansion and Playa Vista (letter, May 16). However, she does the public a disservice by misstating facts regarding the Playa Vista development and the Ballona Wetlands.
She calls the wetlands “the proposed site of Playa Vista” and then speaks of Steven Spielberg’s “plans to build DreamWorks studios in the wetlands.” Neither claim is true.
In fact, under the Friends’ settlement agreement with Playa Vista, the Ballona Wetlands will not only be saved but restored (to the tune of $12.5 million) and turned over to the public. And DreamWorks would be located 1 1/2 miles from the Ballona Wetlands on a site that already contains 22 buildings (the old Hughes Aircraft Co.) and is 12 to 15 feet above sea level.
