Cathedral Sets State Marks in Win Over St. Genevieve

Quarterback Robert De La Cruz and receiver Earvin Johnson of Cathedral High set state records in a 67-38 victory over St. Genevieve in a Santa Fe League game Saturday night at Birmingham High.
De La Cruz threw nine touchdown passes, eight to Johnson, whose scoring catches came on plays of 14, six, 50, 24, eight, 44, six and 24 yards. David Ruiz caught a nine-yard touchdown pass.
Mike Smith of Los Altos passed for eight touchdowns against Rowland in 1982, a Southern Section record, and was one of seven players tied for the state record.
Three players shared the state record of six touchdown receptions in a game.
Cathedral did not call a running play until Stephon Cannon’s 14-yard touchdown with 4:39 to play, although De La Cruz gained eight yards on a broken play late in the first half.
De La Cruz completed 28 of 39 passes for 503 yards, third-best on the Southern Section all-time list. He did not have a pass intercepted.
Johnson finished with 12 receptions for 251 yards.
Juan Martinez rushed 11 times for 114 yards including touchdown runs of eight and two yards for the Valiants (0-9, 0-5).
Mikey Pisano of St. Genevieve ran for a four-yard touchdown and connected with Ricardo Aceveda for a 23-yard touchdown pass play. Pisano completed seven of 19 passes for 119 yards.
