San Clemente’s Dan Coviello threw an interception with 4 1/2 minutes left in the fourth quarter and Fontana held on to win, 17-7, in a Southern Section Division I football game at Fontana Friday.
Chris McCormack had scored three minutes earlier on a 30-yard pass from Coviello to bring San Clemente within 10. After the touchdown, Mike Hogg recovered his second fumble for San Clemente and Coviello threw the interception a play later.
Fontana, which will play Los Alamitos in the second round, took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on Marquis Stark’s three-yard run, which capped a 60-yard drive for the Steelers.
Fontana made a field goal early in the second quarter and Scott Shepard added a one-yard touchdown on a quarterback sneak with one minute 30 seconds left in the half.
San Clemente (6-4-1) came out strong defensively in the second half to shut out Fontana, which was averaging more than 31 points a game going into Friday’s game. Michael Calvitti had two sacks for the Tritons.
