Firefighters Promote Safety Campaign

Practice makes perfect. Not only that, it can be a lifesaver. That is the point the Oxnard Fire Department is trying to make to residents during National Fire Prevention Week.
During the week, which begins today, firefighters at Oxnard’s six stations will urge residents to review their fire emergency plans and check the batteries in their smoke detectors.
Statistics show that eight out of 10 fire fatalities occur at home, said a Fire Department spokesman.
According to the department, most households do not have an escape plan, and those that do tend not to practice it.
In addition to safety information, fire stations in Oxnard and throughout the county will provide free smoke detectors to low-income families and the elderly.
People can sign up for a free detector at any fire station in the county until Oct. 17.
