Ventura 18, Santa Monica 17--Brian Shubin scored on a two-point conversion run with 16 seconds left to carry the Pirates (4-0) to a WSC interdivision victory at Santa Monica.
Before the decisive conversion, Shubin completed a 36-yard touchdown pass to Reco Caudle that capped a four-play, 40-yard drive and pulled Ventura (4-0) to within 17-16.
Santa Monica (1-2) went ahead, 17-10, with 45 seconds left on a 26-yard touchdown run by Altriki Brown. Brown’s score ended a four-play, 39-yard drive for the Corsairs.
Ventura tied the score, 10-10, with 7:03 remaining on Paul Czerniak’s 42-yard field goal.
Ventura’s Travis Rogers rushed 28 times for 166 yards, but fumbled twice deep in Santa Monica territory to stop drives by the Pirates in each half.
Mount San Jacinto 27, Antelope Valley 14--For the second consecutive week, Antelope Valley fell behind early because of turnovers, losing a nonconference game in Lancaster.
The Eagles (3-0) scored four plays into the game on a four-yard run by David Minich. On the ensuing kickoff, Brad Byers grabbed returner Sal Iabichella’s fumble and returned it 19 yards for the touchdown.
San Jacinto’s Jeff Shields also returned an Antelope Valley fumble for a touchdown, stripping Tyree Booker and racing 36 yards.
Canyons 42, East L.A. 34--Kevin Carrasco scored the decisive touchdown on a one-yard run in the third overtime at Canyons.
Carrasco completed 18 of 37 for 267 yards and three touchdowns. Canyons also got 118 yards rushing in 25 carries from Jason Parks. Heloyt Cervantes kicked three field goals, including one of 28 yards that tied the score, 34-34, with three seconds left in regulation.
