Servite Steps Up on Defense in 35-14 Win

Servite dominated Saddleback, 35-14, in Saturday’s Golden West League game, but an injury to Saddleback senior Josh McHalffey was what concerned the Roadrunners most.

The game at Titan Stadium was delayed for about 20 minutes in the first quarter as McHalffey was stabilized and taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Orange.

According to Saddleback Coach Jerry Witte, McHalffey was undergoing tests.

“His signs were improving. He seems to be fine,” Witte said, adding that his team handled the situation well. “They were OK. I filled them in with what I knew. All you can do is go out and play the game.”

In the five offensive possessions after the injury, the Servite defense stepped up, pushing back the Roadrunners for a total of minus-15 yards. During that span, the Friars (2-4, 1-0) scored 21 points to close out the half.

McHalffey’s injury was not the only setback for the Roadrunners (1-4-1, 0-1). Defensive tackle Robert Sanchez went down in the second quarter with what Witte believes is a broken arm.

Makeshift Servite quarterback Steve Ayers, normally a defensive back, was under center after just five days of practice at the position, filling in for Dan Petropulos and Adam Ernst, who are injured. Ayers was more than capable, rushing for two touchdowns.
