Aztecs Are Running It Up

San Diego State is known more for its passing attack than its ground game.
USC is famous, of course, for the four tailbacks who have won the Heisman Trophy.
The surprise is that in the past 10 years, San Diego State has had seven 1,000-yard rushers--OK, so three of them were Marshall Faulk--while USC has had three.
San Diego State even has one on this year’s team. Jonas Lewis ran for 1,021 yards last season as a sophomore and had 72 yards in the Aztecs’ 26-14 loss to Wisconsin. “Their running back, Jonas Lewis, has tremendous speed and had 1,000 yards last year. We’re concerned about him,” USC Coach Paul Hackett said.
USC’s last 1,000-yard rusher was Delon Washington in 1995. Ricky Ervins (1989) and Mazio Royster (1990) are the others in the past decade.
San Diego State’s are Paul Hewitt (1988), Faulk (1991-93), Wayne Pittman (1994) and George Jones (1995).
