LeCocq, Seniority Rule in Mission

Freshman Elena Ferrero of Harvard-Westlake High might have to wait before assuming the throne as the Mission League’s dominant softball pitcher.

Maureen LeCocq of Chaminade isn’t done with it yet.

LeCocq (7-2), The Times’ Valley pitcher of the year last season, pitched a two-hitter Friday against the Wolverines in a 2-0 victory at Chaminade Middle School.

The Stanford-bound right-hander struck out 10 and scored both runs, on a double by Lauren Rousselet in the first and on a botched rundown between third and home in the third.

Ferrero (4-3), who struck out 17 Louisville batters on Tuesday, wasn’t scheduled to pitch for the Wolverines (6-9, 1-1) against Chaminade, but was pressed into duty when All-Mission League pitcher Anna Russell pulled a hamstring earlier in the week.

Ferrero fanned three and allowed five hits against Chaminade (8-6-1, 2-0 in league play), ranked No. 3 in the region by The Times.

“She’s a good pitcher,” Coach Steve Harrington of Chaminade said of Ferrero. “I’m a big fan of hers and enjoyed watching her throw.”
