Students Face Off in Math Contest Today
Dozens of middle school students will spend today doing something most kids despise--math problems.
Students from 14 schools in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties will compete in the regional MathCounts competition at Anacapa Middle School in Ventura from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The competition, which the public is welcome to attend, is part of a national program designed to spark more interest in mathematics.
The 56 students will compete individually and as teams in written and fast-paced oral competitions. Youngsters will be quizzed on probability, statistics, linear algebra and algebraic polynomials.
Winners of today’s competition will advance to the state finals. The top two local teams and an all-star team, made up of the top four individuals, will represent the two counties in Irvine on March 13.
