* The editorial “Chiapas: A State of Denial” (Dec. 29) raises important issues.
Especially significant is the role of the paramilitary organizations that terrorize the rural population of Chiapas. By sponsoring such groups, the government armed forces create public deniability for their own role in the atrocities. But people on the ground are very conscious of the working relationship between the military and paramilitary forces.
