Prosecutors filed felony charges Wednesday against two men who crashed into a Starbucks store in North Hollywood, allegedly in an effort to outrun police in a stolen car.
Timothy March, 19, of North Hollywood, and Jeffrey Tanigawa, 20, were charged with joy riding in the Friday morning incident. March, the driver, was also charged with evading a police officer and driving under the influence of methamphetamines. Tanigawa also is facing false-imprisonment charges because he allegedly used a person as a shield.
Los Angeles Police Det. Gordon Hagge said that after the car smashed through the window of the coffee shop, Tanigawa bailed out, grabbed a customer and hid behind the person.
Five people were injured in the crash, authorities said.
Hagge said police knew the defendants’ car was stolen as they chased them. The chase covered less than a mile, and ended when March swerved to miss a bus and ran into the store on Magnolia Boulevard near Lankershim Boulevard, Hagge said.
