By a 3-2 vote Tuesday, the City Council joined 10 other cities in the Orange County Regional Airport Authority, a pro-El Toro International Airport group. Mayor Pro Tem Barbara Kiley and Councilman Gene Wisner cast the dissenting votes.

Kiley said Wednesday that she does not favor an airport at El Toro. Flights out of John Wayne Airport come near the city, but the noise does not affect residents, Kiley said, adding that she does not see a need for an additional airport in the county.

Mayor John M. Gullixson, meanwhile, voted to join the group, noting that he and the city’s voters are pro-airport and that the planning process must continue. “A lot of South County cities have put their heads in the sand, hoping it will go away,” he said. “It’s absolutely infantile to avoid the issue. The planning process needs to proceed.”
