Chris Lewis of Long Beach Poly, J.P. Losman of Venice and Kyle Boller of Newhall Hart made the Southland a pass-happy region during the 1998 football season, and all three quarterbacks have been named to Parade magazine’s All-American team.
The 56-member team also features five other Southland players: San Bernardino Pacific running back Joe Weber, Westlake tight end Mike Seidman, Corona lineman Shane Lehmann, Los Alamitos lineman Bernard Riley and Long Beach Poly defensive back Darrell Rideaux.
The team was selected by coaches, scouts and recruiters and will appear in this Sunday’s issue of Parade.
Lewis, winner of The Times’ Glenn Davis Award, presented annually to the top prep player in the Southland, will attend Stanford in the fall. He established a state record for touchdown passes with 107 in his career and led Long Beach Poly to a 27-game winning streak over two seasons. The streak ended with a loss to Santa Ana Mater Dei in the Southern Section Division I championship game.
Losman, who will attend UCLA, was named co-player of the year in the City Section after leading Venice to an unbeaten regular season. The Gondoliers lost to eventual champion Woodland Hills Taft in the section quarterfinals.
Boller, who will attend California, led Hart to the Southern Section Division III championship. He was named state player of the year by Cal-Hi Sports after passing for 59 touchdowns and a state-record 4,841 yards.
Rideaux and Riley have committed to USC, Lehmann to UCLA.
Weber has made visits to USC, UCLA, Wisconsin, Colorado and Texas A&M.;
Seidman is reportedly considering UCLA, USC and Colorado.
