CHATSWORTH — Authorities closed the 118 Freeway at rush hour Wednesday after a truck carrying eight cylinders of liquid nitrogen rolled over in the carpool lane.
Traffic was backed up for hours, but no one was injured in the 4:50 p.m. crash, said Officer Frank Sansone of the California Highway Patrol.
The Los Angeles Fire Department asked that the freeway be shut down in both directions between Tampa and De Soto avenues as a precaution while the cylinders were removed.
The CHP diverted some traffic onto surrounding streets, causing congestion on Devonshire, Chatsworth and Rinaldi streets.
The westbound side of the freeway was partially reopened about 7:15 p.m. All lanes were open by 8:01 p.m.
