Arizona Needs Something Extra to Beat Northridge

Arizona scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to beat Cal State Northridge, 3-1, Thursday in pool play of the Cal State Fullerton tournament.
With a runner placed at second base to start innings after regulation, Arizona scored the go-ahead run on a two-out double by Erika Hanson, from Thousand Oaks High. Hanson scored on a double by Felicity Willis.
Arizona (25-1), ranked No. 2 in the nation, scored first. Nicole Giordano, a sophomore from Saugus High, singled, advanced to second on Katie Swan’s single, stole third and scored on a throwing error by catcher Jamie Moore.
Northridge (13-9) answered with a solo homer by Jodi Borenstein to lead off the fifth.
Tara Glaister (7-5) of Northridge allowed eight hits, walked one and struck out 12. Hanson and Giordano, Times’ regional players of the year in high school, each had two hits.
Jessica Creith and Marisa Ornelas each had two hits for Northridge, which stranded 12 runners and had six hits against Becky Lemke.
Canyons 4, Cuesta 3--With two outs and a runner on third in the top of the eighth inning, Nicole Giampaola hit a single to left field to drive in the deciding run for the Cougars (7-7-1, 2-2) in a Western State Conference game played at Cuesta (22-3, 3-1).
Moorpark 5, Santa Monica 0--Delaina Talili hit a two-run home run in the first inning and Jennifer Richards hit two run-scoring doubles for the Raiders (17-3, 4-0) in a Western State Conference victory over the Corsairs (1-5, 0-3) at Moorpark.
BASEBALL
Glendale 16, Valley 4--Matt Hellman singled home the go-ahead run in the eighth and the Vaqueros scored all their runs in the last three innings of a WSC game at Valley.
Glendale (10-13, 4-3) took an 8-4 advantage after the eighth inning, when John Campanella hit a three-run double.
Jason Botts and Anthony Fabrizio hit grand slams for the Vaqueros in an eight-run ninth inning. Botts’ homer was his ninth and Fabrizio’s was his second.
Ventura 18, Santa Barbara 4--Matt Alonzo had three hits, including a first-inning grand slam, and drove in five runs to pace a 16-hit attack for the Pirates in a WSC North Division victory at Ventura.
Aaron Dixon had three hits and two RBIs for Ventura (10-9, 3-4).
Oxnard 8, Hancock 5--Jess Sanchez hit a tie-breaking RBI single in a four-run fifth for the Condors (10-8, 4-4) in a WSC North Division victory at Oxnard. Sanchez finished with three hits and also had a save.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Hawaii 6, Cal State Northridge 3--Sophomore Kendra Segura, voted Big Sky Conference player of the week Thursday, recorded a singles victory over Suzie Saunders, 6-1, 6-1, but the Matadors (6-6) fell in a nonconference match at UC Santa Barbara.
