Glendale’s Roland Moves to State Tennis Semifinals

Andy Roland of Glendale College advanced to today’s state tennis championship semifinals with first-round and quarterfinal victories Friday at Blackhawk Country Club in Danville.

Rani Setiawati of Glendale also advanced in the women’s competition, which will conclude with championship matches following the semifinals.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Calabasas 11, Burbank 7--Nick Weiss and Alex Menichini each went 3-0 in singles play to help the Coyotes to a nonleague victory at Burbank.

Eric Fingleson and Dan Rubenstein were 3-0 in doubles for Calabasas (11-8).

Thousand Oaks 18, Royal 0--No. 1 singles player Philip Sheng, 40-2 in dual-match play, did not lose a game while sweeping three opponents in a Marmonte League match at Thousand Oaks.

Simi Valley 14, Newbury Park 4--No. 1 singles player Jeremy Quinlan and Simi Valley’s No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams each swept three sets for the Pioneers (10-8, 6-6 in league play) in a Marmonte League victory at Rancho Simi Community Park.

Rio Mesa 16, Camarillo 2--Quinn Borchard improved to 29-1 in sets this season with a sweep at No. 1 singles for the host Spartans (16-1) in a Pacific View League victory over Camarillo (12-6, 5-2).

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Royal def. Westlake, 15-9, 15-6, 15-5--Kevin Van Fleet, Cam Dickson and Ryan Moberly each had seven kills, and the Highlanders won their 76th consecutive league match and completed their fifth consecutive unbeaten Marmonte League season at Royal.

Matt Janousek had 43 assists for Royal (23-0, 12-0).

Simi Valley def. Thousand Oaks, 8-15, 17-15, 4-15, 15-13, 15-9--Kurt Mjoen had 16 kills and seven blocks and Dustin Pierson added 15 kills to help the visiting Pioneers (10-4, 8-4) upset second-place Thousand Oaks (9-3) in a Marmonte League match.

Highland def. Palmdale, 15-6, 15-12, 15-3--Adam Green and Rick Haight combined for 25 kills with only one hitting error for the Bulldogs (13-1, 9-1) in a Golden League match at Highland.

Green had 13 kills and 13 digs and Haight contributed 12 kills and four blocks. Jody Shadrick had 46 assists for Highland.

Quartz Hill def. Littlerock, 15-2, 15-8, 15-4--Brandan Butchart had 13 kills for the visiting Rebels (13-3, 7-3) in a Golden League match.
