I was pleased to read about the background, locations, personalities, difficulties, etc., regarding “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” which I intend to see as soon as it opens (“Midsummer’s Dream Team,” by David Gritten, May 9).
However, Gritten didn’t mention--I presume he didn’t know about--the absolutely gorgeous animated version by Jiri Trnka from some 40 years ago. Its magical images are still clear in my mind after the more than 30 years since I saw it.
Also, his reference to “TV viewers deeply irritated by the character of Ally McBeal” implies, I think, his own reaction to the character. His premise of potential viewer pleasure at Calista Flockhart’s soaking was nasty and unnecessary. Flockhart is a wonderful actress and McBeal is a fascinating character.
