Sheng, Weiss Move Into Semifinals

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Philip Sheng of Thousand Oaks High and Nick Weiss of Calabasas continued on a potential collision course Friday in the Southern Section individual tennis tournament.
Top-seeded Sheng and No. 2-seeded Weiss each won quarterfinal matches to advance to singles semifinals today at Seacliff Tennis Club. If they each win again, they will meet in the final at 12:30 p.m.
Sheng, a sophomore, defeated Cody Jackson of Los Alamitos, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), after drawing a bye in the round of 16.
Sheng will meet Carl McCafferty of San Bernardino San Gorgonio in the semifinals, which begin at 10:30 a.m. McCafferty advanced in three sets.
Weiss, a junior, outlasted Brian Kent of Dana Hills, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, and will meet Daniel Clemens of Claremont, who also won in three sets.
Weiss defeated Gordon Hong of Arcadia, 6-1, 6-3, in the round of 16.
In doubles, Andrew Lieu and Willie Mullin of Thousand Oaks reached the semifinals with a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (8-6) victory over Emil Novak and Tom Novak of La Verne Damien. Lieu and Mullin will meet top-seeded Dave Gleiberman and Goh Fukugaki of Peninsula in a semifinal.
Lieu and Mullin defeated Brian Morton and Randy Myers of Corona del Mar, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, in the round of 16.
The teams of Braden Aftergood and Trevor Hindon of Calabasas and Carlos Gil and Mike Smith of Crespi each lost in the round of 16.
