Councilman Shawn Boyd has sided with residents who are against a proposed 175-room hotel project near the San Gabriel River channel.
A petition signed by 600 residents in opposition to the development impressed Boyd. He said he also agrees with the concern of increased traffic in the area.
“I’m not really for a hotel,” Boyd said. “Everything around [the proposed site] is residential, and we want consistent land use.”
The vacant area, which is near Marina Drive and 1st Street, is currently in the hands of the Department of Water and Power. A city plan allows for the development of a hotel along with a 70% recreational use. There is strong developer interest in the site, which is valued at $3.5 million.
