* Re “Much-Maligned School Teaches Human Rights,” by Amelia Simpson, Commentary, Nov. 18: One is somewhat relieved to learn that the School of the Americas’ curriculum now includes lectures on ethics and human rights. So now we have Ethics 100 and Torture 101. Some progress!
The best deterrence to prevent the recurrence of atrocities by the Latin American military lies not in academic lectures delivered in Georgia but in the strict enforcement of the United Nations resolutions against the violation of human rights, which allow the violators to be brought to justice no matter where they are. Witness Augusto Pinochet in England.
The School of the Americas should be closed down--and the sooner the better.
