A Ventura Police Department motorcycle officer who was struck by a car en route to work Sunday morning was in serious condition at a local hospital, Port Hueneme police officials said.
The crash occurred about 8:45 a.m. while Roderick Giles, 38, was riding the motorcycle in uniform northbound on Ventura Road, just north of Redwood Street in Port Hueneme, police said.
Valerie Delatorre, 49, of Oxnard, who was driving south on Ventura Road, attempted to turn left into the parking lot of a grocery store and hit Giles, who was thrown from his motorcycle, officials said.
Giles, a 10-year veteran of the Police Department, suffered injuries to a leg, arm and shoulder. He underwent leg surgery Sunday at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard. The injuries were not considered life threatening, officials said.
The accident remained under investigation.
