WASHINGTON — George W. Bush has broken the $80-million mark in his Republican presidential campaign, adding to his own fund-raising record while replenishing his war chest after an expensive primary effort.
The campaign raised about $7.6 million from March 1 to April 6, spokesman Scott McClellan said Friday, three-quarters of the goal of $10 million by the end of April. Bush’s total for the campaign is now more than $81 million.
The campaign expects to raise an additional $550,000 this week with events in North Carolina and Michigan.
The apparent Democratic presidential nominee, Vice President Al Gore, had about $10 million to spend as of the end of February.
