Forget swaying palm trees, Lake Tahoe or Half Dome. For the first time in state history, California license plates could feature a person’s image: former President Ronald Reagan.
*Bill sponsored by Assemblyman Tony Strickland (R-Thousand Oaks) approved by state Senate last August.

*Plates cost an extra $50, plus $40 for annual renewals.
*Proceeds go toward educational programs at Reagan’s Presidential Library in Simi Valley.
*Room for only six characters (not seven) on plates.
*The Department of Motor Vehicles must receive at least 5,000 applications before 90-day production period can begin.
*Plates to be produced by inmates at Folsom State Prison.
*The Presidential Library reports about 1,500 requests made since February.
*First plate is promised to wife Nancy.
