Final Results Delayed to Monitor Close Vote

The release of final results in Paraguay’s vote for a successor to slain Vice President Luis Maria Argana has been postponed for days because the balloting was so close, election officials said. Authorities suspended the release of official results late Sunday after 90% of the vote had been counted, saying they wanted to closely monitor the tallying of the remaining ballots. Opposition candidate Julio Cesar Franco appeared to hold a slim lead in early returns Sunday, with 47.77% of the ballot. Felix Argana, the son of the slain vice president, had 46.93%.
