Emmys Go on Public Display for 1st Time

UNIVERSAL CITY — With much fanfare, including an armed motorcade, 27 Emmy statuettes were transported Tuesday to Universal Studios Hollywood, where they will go on public display. It is the first time the public has been able to view the Emmys before presentation.
Starting today, visitors can see the actual statuettes, one in each category, that will be presented Sept. 10 at the 52nd Annual Emmy Awards ceremony of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
The statuettes are on view in the lobby of the Globe Theatre inside the theme park. Guarded round the clock, the Emmys will remain on display through Sept. 5, after which they will be engraved with the winners’ names.
The major contest for this year’s top television awards is between NBC’s “The West Wing” and HBO’s “The Sopranos,” both of which have 18 nominations.
Ballot boxes are included in the display area so visitors can vote for their all-time favorite Emmy winners in 10 categories, including comedy and drama series, lead actor and actress, miniseries and children’s program.
