Armed with a $286,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education, the school board voted unanimously to authorize district staff to form a Chinese Cultural Center at Las Flores Elementary School.
The center will be open to schools throughout the nation.
The grant will be awarded over three years. Some of the money also will be used to create Mandarin Chinese language classes at all grade levels. Chinese classes are currently limited to Las Flores elementary and middle schools.
