OGALLALA, Neb. — A man who kidnapped and dismembered his ex-girlfriend’s 3-year-old son has been sentenced to death.
The three-judge panel ruled Thursday that exceptional depravity warranted the death penalty for Raymond Mata Jr.
Mata, 26, of Scottsbluff, was convicted in January of first-degree murder, felony murder and kidnapping for the March 1999 killing of Adam Gomez.
Body parts were found in the basement of Mata’s sister’s home and in a freezer and a dog bowl at Mata’s home. Bone fragments were recovered from the stomach of Mata’s dog.
