The imported red fire ant has established itself around Orange County, including at least four sites in Stanton, said Dick Meyer, assistant manager for the Orange County Vector Control Agency, at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting.
Areas of the Southwestern U.S. already have serious fire ant infestations, impeding outdoor pastimes such as picnics and driving out native wildlife. If left unchecked, the ant could also become a serious problem in Stanton and other Orange County cities, Meyer said.
Information about the ant can be found at https://www.ocfireant.com. Anyone who finds red imported fire ants should notify authorities by calling (800) 491-1899.
