* Re “Men Tend to Avoid Health Care, Study Says,” March 14: There could be another reason why men avoid going to the doctor. They might have seen a doctor once or twice and gotten no help, or too much help.
Last year my doctor put me through four mammograms and two ultrasounds with almost no explanation why. I hadn’t complained of any pain or lumps. The stress this caused was worse than not seeing a doctor at all.
In December I went to the emergency room because I couldn’t breathe. The doctor told me he couldn’t do anything for me.
Recently I went to a new doctor because I have a very sore foot. The doctor promised to refer me to a specialist but never sent me the referral paperwork.
I’m beginning to understand why my father wouldn’t ever go to a doctor.
