Western used its dominating speed and power to score early and often as the Pioneers rolled past winless Savanna, 63-13, in an Orange League game at Western High Friday.
More important, the Pioneers (8-1 overall, 4-0) set up a league title showdown next week against Brea Olinda, which is also undefeated in league play.
Western wasted little time in racking up the points and yards, scoring touchdowns on five of its first six possessions and outgaining Savanna, 309-22, in the first half.
Just 2 1/2 minutes into the game, quarterback Mike Hicks found Kyle Stanley down the right sideline for a 41-yard scoring pass and a 7-0 advantage. It was the second play of the drive.
David Gober, who led the county in touchdowns (22) and scoring (136 points) coming into the weekend, scored on a 51-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter. Gober finished with 89 yards rushing and one touchdown in five carries.
Rodney Eason, Chris Jackson and Hicks also found the end zone in the first half on touchdown runs of 32, 13, and 61 respectively.
The defense recorded a safety and a fumble return for a score in the half as the Pioneers took a commanding 43-0 halftime lead.
In fact, the lead was so big that both coaches agreed to play with a running clock in the second half. Savanna’s Michael Gonzalez led all rushers with 157 yards and two touchdowns. Western’s ground attack, which averaged 307 rushing yards per game in league play, gained 336 yards on Friday.
