A man and woman were killed when the sport utility vehicle they were riding in crashed near the Los Angeles County line, police said Thursday.
The vehicle is registered to an Oxnard resident, but authorities have not released the identities of the victims.
The accident occurred about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday when the 2000 Ford Expedition swerved off Kanan Road, south of Silver Creek Road near Agoura Hills. The vehicle slammed into a light pole, then into an embankment, and caught fire about 40 feet from the road, the California Highway Patrol said.
Witnesses reported that the vehicle was traveling faster than the 50-mph speed limit on Kanan, authorities said.
The identity of the woman, who was the driver, is being withheld until relatives are notified, but she is thought to be about 30 years old, said Scott Carrier, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County coroner.
The man’s identity was unknown because his body was badly burned, Carrier said. Investigators may have to check dental records to identify him.
Autopsies will probably be done this weekend, Carrier said. Investigators will conduct toxicology tests to determine whether drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash.
