Chapman Rolls to Big Basketball Victory

The undefeated Chapman men’s basketball team trounced Southwestern (Ariz.), 73-50, in the championship game of the Chapman Invitational.
The Panthers (5-0) have won every game they have played in the tournament since it began in 1996.
Against Southwestern (5-3), Chapman took an early lead and extended it to 41-20 at the half.
Center Mike Gartner was six of eight from the field, scoring a team-high 13 points and pulling down 12 rebounds.
In the Bill Spasoff Memorial men’s basketball tournament:
Vanguard 88, South Dakota Tech 77--Six players scored in double figures for the Lions (1-3), who led by 18 points at the half. Senior Ardis Curtis had 16 points and seven assists for Vanguard.
University of Mary 69, Concordia 67--The Eagles let an eight-point second-half lead slip away and missed a chance to win when Chris Clausen’s three-point attempt glanced off the rim at the buzzer. Center Lance Marquardt scored a team-high 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Concordia (0-3).
In the Hawaii women’s basketball tournament:
Stephen F. Austin 65, UC Irvine 44--Stephen F. Austin broke it open by outscoring the Anteaters, 36-18, in the second half. Maree Vincent had 13 points, seven rebounds and three steals for UCI.
In the Westmont women’s basketball tournament:
Chapman 80, Occidental 57--Guard Melissa Bynon hit six of 11 from the field for 16 points and backcourt mate Shamekia Perkins added 14 points and five rebounds for the Panthers (3-2).
In other women’s basketball:
San Francisco 96, Cal State Fullerton 56--Alison Parks led Fullerton with 16 points.
