The City Council has approved new zoning and design guidelines Wednesday for a commercial section of Canoga Park.
The ordinance covers a business district bounded by Topanga Canyon Boulevard on the west, Canoga Avenue on the east, Wyandotte Street on the north and Gault Street on the south.
By establishing the area--known by its formal name as the Downtown Canoga Park Community Design Overlay District--officials said they hope to revitalize the community’s stores and public properties. Many businesses line Sherman Way between Topanga and Canoga.
Under the ordinance, new billboards are prohibited, some new signs, including those on poles or canopies, are banned, and no new automobile service businesses are permitted on Sherman Way or Owensmouth Avenue.
“Ever since the early hours after the [January 1994] earthquake, it has been renewing itself and tapping the energy of large numbers of residents and business owners and employees in the area,” said Councilwoman Laura Chick, who represents the area and has pushed for the design district.
Establishing the district, Chick said, is a city tool that will help businesses improve themselves.
