A man and woman who were inspecting their disabled sport-utility vehicle on a shoulder of the Garden Grove Freeway were struck and killed late Sunday by a suspected drunk driver, according to the California Highway Patrol.
John Cummins, 29, of Santa Ana was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
The unidentified couple had pulled to the side of the freeway near the Goldenwest Street offramp about 9:45 p.m. to change a flat, investigators said. Both died at the scene.
Cummins and his passengers, Terry Alejo, 41, of Lynwood and an 11-year-old, were taken to UC Irvine Medical Center in critical condition. Cummins was placed under arrest but not booked because of his injuries.
