Cabaret for Lovers of Broadway

A Phantom, a Pimpernel, a musical spoof and Rita Moreno as the lone chanteuse in a guy-heavy rotation will make up the Orange County Performing Arts Center’s cabaret lineup for 2001-2002.

The Phantom is Davis Gaines, who made his mark as the masked leading man in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Phantom of the Opera.” The Pimpernel is Douglas Sills, currently doing a Shakespearean turn in “Much Ado About Nothing” at South Coast Repertory, but booked next year to show off the pipes that helped win him a Tony nomination on Broadway as the Scarlet Pimpernel. Moreno has been a star since 1961, when she won a supporting actress Oscar as Anita in “West Side Story.” She also has won a Tony, a Grammy and two Emmys.

The spoof is “Forbidden Broadway,” a playful revue that pokes fun at past and current Broadway targets. Tickets for “Forbidden Broadway” will be separate from the five-performer subscription series.

Rounding out the series are James Naughton, twice a Tony winner in “Chicago” and “City of Angels,” and Jason Graae, whose credits include playing Harry Houdini in “Ragtime.”
