Martina Nejedly of Palm Springs, Dianne Matias of Torrance and Nikita Bhardwaj of Mission Viejo are the top-seeded women’s tennis players in the Acura Classic opportunity tournament beginning today at Rancho San Clemente Tennis and Fitness Club in San Clemente.
Matias won the U.S. Tennis Assn. girls’ 18 Southern California sectional championship in 2000.
The winner of the prequalifying event for the $750,000 Acura Classic earns a spot in a round-robin playoff July 27 against winners of opportunity tournaments in Industry Hills and San Diego.
The winner of that event gains a berth in the Acura Classic qualifying tournament that begins July 28 at La Costa Resort and Spa. The Acura Classic begins July 30 at La Costa.
The field includes fifth-seeded Iris Ichim, a Beverly Hills High sophomore who two weeks ago won the girls’ 18 sectional championship and is ranked eighth nationally. Kim-Ahn Nguyen of Santa Ana, the girls’ 18 sectional runner-up, is seeded sixth.
