Re “A Plan to Take Phones Out of Drivers’ Hands,” July 10: As a freeway traveler and cell phone user, I would be willing to abide by some inane legislation regarding the use of my phone--if Assemblyman Joseph Simitian (D-Palo Alto) will submit bills to prevent the application of makeup, the reading of map books and newspapers, the playing of musical instruments, the handling of pets, changing clothes, eating, drinking and yes, even daydreaming. All of those activities have an effect on the attention span of drivers.
Wouldn’t we be better served if we improved the education of drivers before they hit the road, rather than using our police resources to catch someone using the phone?
