Sylmar 31, San Fernando 19--Danny Burney rushed for 224 yards and two touchdowns in 17 carries to lead the Spartans (6-1, 3-0), who virtually locked up a Valley Mission League title with the victory. Burney also sparked the defense, breaking up passes and making several critical tackles.
San Fernando’s Ramon Perry returned the opening kickoff for a 94-yard touchdown. Burney returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown, but the play was nullified because of a clipping penalty.
San Fernando quarterback Ruben Nevarez completed 17 of 33 passes for 265 yards and a touchdown while Perry caught nine passes for 144 yards.
Sylmar rushed for 331 yards and had 437 yards of offense.
After San Fernando (4-3, 2-1) pulled to within 24-19, Sylmar quarterback Lance DiBene threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Browner with 7:07 to play. San Fernando drove to Sylmar’s 15-yard line with 3:45 left, but Browner fumbled.
