About 800 employees of the China Lake Naval Weapons Center in Ridgecrest were sent home after a substance that couldn’t be identified was found in a laboratory mail room.
The substance was found at 3:20 p.m. in the Michelson Laboratory, center spokeswoman Doris Lance said. Test results were expected within 24 hours, she said.
Michelson employees were told not to return to work until notified. Other base employees remained on their usual schedules.
Lance said she didn’t know what the material looked like or where in the mail room it was found, but FBI agent Nick Rossi of the bureau’s Sacramento office said he believed it was discovered on equipment.
